OpenAI is Being Sued by Eight US States for Harming Children and Fooling Adults With its Famous Chatbot
HARRISBURG, Pa. At least eight states are suing artificial intelligence giant OpenAI, accusing the company’s popular chatbot model of violating state consumer protection laws by harming children and fooling adults in what prosecutors are calling a reckless pursuit of profit.
The claims say the company’s chatbot model, ChatGPT, is handing out harmful medical advice, promoting paranoia and instructing people to kill themselves or damage or kill others.
The complaints also say chatbots appear nice and caring while exploiting vulnerable populations and teens, the first generation to grow up with artificial intelligence.
OpenAI is hurting kids, and they’re lying to Iowans,” Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said in a statement.
The state also accused OpenAI of releasing rogue AI models, or “cyberhacking agents”, as one lawsuit put it, that hacked into other organisations, lied to human users, and generated new mission orders for themselves.
San Francisco-based OpenAI said in a statement that it has built safety precautions into ChatGPT for youngsters and would continue to do so to improve the model. It also said it is looking at what it calls “misaligned models” and that it hadn’t seen anything comparable to the rogue incident uncovered in July, when an AI agent broke into another AI company.
The lawsuits are the most coordinated state action ever taken against an artificial intelligence company,” said Matthew Bergman, founding attorney of the Social Media Victims Law Centre.
Arizona stated in its lawsuit that ChatGPT encourages minors to disclose personal information with it and, at times, discourages them from sharing that information with parents, authorities or others.
