Press Freedom Groups say Trump’s Media Bans Deprive the People
Freedom of the press groups are suing the Trump administration over its efforts to restrict major US news organisations from covering the White House, court filings show.
The six plaintiffs, scholars, advocates and journalists contend that media bans implemented by the White House violate the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which protects the press and freedom of speech.
Their action follows a separate court challenge by CNN, Politico and MSNOW over the White House’s efforts to cancel or limit their press credentials.
The Knight First Amendment Institute and the Media and Information Access Clinic at Yale Law School filed the lawsuit on behalf of the plaintiffs. Since Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025, the White House has clashed with numerous long-established US media firms, which the president has often accused of creating fake news.
The six plaintiffs are asking a New York federal court to declare the administration’s selective prohibitions of the media outlets unconstitutional under the First Amendment and to stop the administration from enforcing the bans.
Plaintiffs said in court documents that they can no longer conduct their jobs without access to information from the White House press.
They say the White House policy “deprives the public” of reporting, and forces journalists who cover Donald Trump “to account for the possibility that a critical or ill-advised word about the president may result in their access being summarily restricted or revoked. Such a ban has a “distorting effect on reportage from the White House, the court brief says.
