Five People are Thought to be Dead During an Elementary School Shooting in Oregon
At least five people are dead in a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Ore., authorities said. Two law enforcement officials familiar with the case told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss it publicly. Officials stated the death toll was preliminary and might vary.
Bend police spokesman Sheila Miller earlier said the subject was dead. It was unclear whether the suspect was among the five.
She also indicated there were numerous victims, and that they were minors. We don’t have a number right now. “We know children are among the victims,” Miller stated at a media briefing.
Silver Rail Elementary had a report of a shot fired into a vehicle parked outside at 12:59 p.m. and authorities were there within minutes. “More 911 calls were coming from inside the school, she claimed.
The perpetrator was shot and went down inside the school shortly after police arrived, Miller said. It was not immediately clear if it was self-inflicted, or if it was by police or by a bystander.
City and police spokespeople did not immediately respond to emails from The Associated Press requesting comment. The Bend-La Pine school district said on Facebook that Silver Rail Elementary was in lockdown.
“We’re going room by room at this time and evacuating each of the people that are in that school. This is the last thing we want to see happen here in Bend,” said McLennan. “It’s devastating,” Miller remarked, stopping and fighting back tears.
