Israel Announces Soldier Killed Near Lebanon Border
  • PublishedMay 25, 2026

The Israeli military announced Monday that a soldier was killed in combat operations in southern Lebanon, bringing the total number of Israeli military casualties in the conflict with Hezbollah to 23.

The soldier was identified as 19-year-old Sergeant Nehoray Leizer, serving with the 601st Combat Engineering Battalion. The Israeli military confirmed he “fell in combat in southern Lebanon,” with an additional soldier severely injured during the same incident.

The Broader Conflict Context

Leizer’s death represents the continuing toll of the escalating military confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah, which intensified following Iran’s involvement in the broader Middle Eastern conflict. Since hostilities began on March 2, a total of 24 Israelis have been killed—23 soldiers and one civilian contractor.

The casualty figures reflect the intensity of operations in southern Lebanon, where Israeli ground forces have been engaged in sustained combat with Hezbollah fighters over contested territory. The mountainous terrain and Hezbollah’s entrenched positions have made military operations challenging and costly.

Young Soldiers, High Risk

Leizer’s youth—he was 19 years old—reflects the composition of Israel’s military, where mandatory service requirements and volunteer soldiers combine to form combat units. Combat engineering battalions, the unit Leizer served with, face particular hazards as they work on demolition, construction of fortifications, and mine-clearing operations often conducted in active combat zones.

The incident that claimed Leizer’s life also resulted in severe injury to a fellow soldier, underscoring the dangerous conditions Israeli forces continue to face in southern Lebanon.

An Ongoing Conflict

The announcement comes as ceasefire discussions between Iran and the United States remain ongoing, with negotiations mediated by Pakistan. The resolution of hostilities between the broader powers—the US and Iran—could potentially affect conditions in Lebanon and Israeli operations there, though fighting on the ground continues despite nominal truces.

For Israel, each casualty announcement represents loss within the military community and among families across the country. The growing toll reflects the intensity of the conflict and the challenges of ground operations in a region where Hezbollah maintains strong defensive positions and the support of Iran.
