US Aircraft Carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to Visit Thailand After Middle East Mission
The US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln will make a stop in Thailand following its demanding deployment in the Middle East, Thai officials confirmed Wednesday.
The Lincoln has been supporting US military operations against Iran, with its deployment marking a record-setting uninterrupted stretch at sea of more than 250 days. Concerns have mounted over the extended deployment amid reports of deteriorating mental health among crew members and shortages of essential supplies, including food and hygiene products.
A Thai government official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization to brief the press, confirmed that the Lincoln will make a brief stop in Thailand for rest and recovery. A statement from the Royal Thai Navy on Tuesday said three ships from a US Navy carrier strike group are scheduled for a short stopover in eastern Thailand for recuperation, adding that no military exercises would take place during the visit. The statement did not identify the specific ships, the port, or the arrival date, citing security concerns.
The US embassy in Bangkok did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the US Navy declined to comment on the matter.
Extended carrier deployments place significant strain on service members separated from home for long stretches, while also increasing wear on the ship and its equipment. Although renewed hostilities between the US and Iran have eased in recent weeks, the Navy continues enforcing a reimposed blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, and the Trump administration has yet to offer clarity on how it plans to wind down the conflict.
