Egypt Probes Drone Attack on Commercial Ships at Damietta Port
DUBAI — Egypt is investigating a drone attack that caused a fire aboard two vessels at the Mediterranean port of Damietta, the cabinet confirmed Thursday.
The blaze began on a US-owned gas storage tanker, the Energos Winter, which was struck by an unidentified projectile, according to maritime security sources. The fire later spread to another vessel, the Gaslog Salem, before being extinguished.
Egypt’s cabinet said no party has claimed responsibility for the attack and that investigations remain ongoing.
The incident marks a potential escalation of regional tensions, as attacks on commercial vessels have spread beyond previous conflict zones in the Middle East. Damietta, located on Egypt’s northern coast, serves as a key hub for trade and energy shipments along the Mediterranean.
No injuries have been reported, and both vessels sustained damage. Maritime security analysts are closely monitoring the situation as authorities work to determine the origin of the drone.
