Democrat Roy Cooper Wins Important North Carolina Senate Seat for Liberals

Democrat Roy Cooper is forecast to win a pivotal Senate race in North Carolina, flipping a crucial seat previously held by Republican Thom Tillis, CBS, a BBC news partner, reported. Cooper is the favorite to defeat Republican challenger Michael Whatley, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee.

This would be the first time the state has elected a Democratic senator since 2008, a big win for a party fighting to win control of Congress from Republicans this midterm election.

Tillis announced last year that he was retiring from the Senate after a falling out with President Donald Trump. “Today you said this has to stop,” the Democrat stated. I’m eager to take that message to Washington and, as your new United States Senator, work to do something about it.

Cooper, 69, served as North Carolina’s governor from 2017 to 2025 and as the state’s attorney general before running for the Senate.

His objective was to cut the cost of food and groceries, health care, electricity and utilities, child care and housing.

Trump nominated Whatley to replace him in the Senate, and Whatley promised to pursue the president’s agenda in the Senate, battle illegal immigration and undo Democratic programs.

North Carolina Sen. Tillis, who is leaving the Senate, did not pursue a third six-year term after breaking with his Republican Party by voting against the president’s domestic policy package, called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Trump criticized Tillis after the vote, saying he will back other candidates in his reelection, labeling him a “talker and complainer.
