Putin Calls Elon Musk a Real Genius During Satellite Talks with the SpaceX CEO
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday he is in “close” contact with Elon Musk about satellite technology, adding “he is a real genius..
The comments occurred at the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow where Putin spoke about Russia’s own satellite internet venture Rassvet which delivers internet connections to people from satellites. He’s a genius, a genuine genius,” Putin remarked of Musk, the BBC reported, translating his comments. “We are in close contact with our American partners, including Mr. Musk.
Starlink is Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The corporation did not reply to a request for comment. It is important for Russia to be in contact with Musk so that Rassvet and Starlink satellites do not “interfere with each other in orbit”, Putin added. This is mutual, and we and our American partners value it, and we are working hard, despite all the political issues,” he said.
The business says it has launched about 13,000 of its satellites. By comparison, there are only a couple dozen Rassvet spacecraft currently in orbit, according to internet satellite trackers.
The Russian Embassy in South Africa claimed on Wednesday that Rassvet is “Russia’s Starlink alternative” and “signifies only the country’s first steps in this field”.”Russia has close contacts with the US on space, including with Elon Musk”, the embassy noted.
Putin’s comments about Rassvet and Starlink come as the U.S. and Russia appear to be drawing closer, even as the five-year anniversary of Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches.
