Iran Engages in very Positive Discussions with the Makkah Accord Nations Regarding the Security of the Region
Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan met with Iran on Monday to prevent a Middle East war from flaring up again, with Tehran saying the negotiations went very well.
Officials from the three nations involved in the Makkah deal had flown to Iran as part of efforts to “de-escalate between the parties to the current crisis,” a statement from the Saudi foreign ministry said. The meetings included Saudi Arabia’s heavyweight Defence Minister Prince Khalid Bin Salman, and were followed by threats from the United States, Iran and Israel that hostilities may resume in the eight-month war.
It was the first joint visit to Tehran by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey since they forged a defence partnership in August in Makkah, the holy city in western Saudi Arabia.
The teams met with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Iranian state television reported that the sides had “agreed to continue discussions,” but made no concrete announcements as the conference ended.
Iran’s security head Mohsen Rezaei was quoted by state television in the capital Tehran as saying: “Very good discussions. I feel a new vibe coming over the region. I felt a very positive atmosphere in the discussions between the gentlemen,” stated the president of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
He claimed they agreed that security in the region “should be achieved by the countries themselves, and that we must prevent any kind of foreign intervention, emphasising the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon, southern Syria, Gaza and the West Bank.
Prince Khalid met Rezaei together with Pakistan’s powerful army leader Gen Asim Munir and Turkish Intelligence leader Ibrahim Kalin.
Regional tensions have spiked ahead of Israel’s important elections on Tuesday and next week’s US midterms where US President Donald Trump’s Republicans are fighting to retain control of both chambers of the US Congress.
