Macron Begs for Calm as France Protests Leave 2,400 Jailed and Almost 1,000 Police Injured
PARIS/LIMOGES: Following one of France’s worst days of unrest in years, with 2,400 people arrested and stores destroyed or damaged during protests over exorbitant prices and deteriorating public services, French President Emmanuel Macron called for calm on Sunday.
Riot police intervened to stop efforts to loot establishments when further conflicts broke out in Paris and Marseille.
A town hall was set on fire, stores were robbed, and buildings were covered in graffiti as violent gangs clashed with police in French cities on Saturday as nationwide protests turned into riots.
We’ve all wondered what was on their minds when we look at these pictures. How can French people do this to France?” Macron stated during a broadcast speech.
Nothing explains, excuses, or justifies it. We’re all feeling ashamed and angry tonight. During Saturday’s protests in Paris, one demonstrator passed away following a heart attack. According to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, police in France made 2,400 arrests and approximately 1,000 officers were hurt.
Saturday’s upheaval exposed deep resentment toward Macron, who steps down in 2027 after ten years in office increasingly characterised by social unrest, a faltering economy, and mounting debt.
According to Macron, peaceful protesters have legitimate complaints and shouldn’t be mistaken for those who want to wreak havoc.
He said the government will allow prefects to prohibit protests when needed to protect public buildings and local businesses, but he refrained from declaring a state of emergency, as certain right-wing legislators had asked.
