Lebanon Sees Massive Return of Syrian Refugees as 120,000 Head Back Home
More than 120,000 Syrian refugees have returned to Syria from Lebanon during the first four months of 2026, according to official figures.
The returns come as fragile ceasefires between the US and Iran and between Hezbollah and Israel have taken hold since early April. Lebanese officials say increasing economic pressure and stricter residency rules are pushing many Syrians to head home.
Currently, 490,424 Syrian refugees are registered with the UN Human Rights Council in Lebanon, though the Lebanese government estimates the actual number at nearly 1.12 million. Syria’s General Authority for Borders and Customs reported that about 1.26 million people have crossed from Lebanon into Syria since January, including the 120,000 refugees. The Jousieh crossing has become a key transit point.
