Kuwait and Bahrain Strengthen Security Following New Regional Attacks

KUWAIT/MANAMA — Kuwait and Bahrain activated their air defence systems early on Thursday to intercept a barrage of “hostile missile and drone attacks,” just hours after Iran’s military vowed retaliation for a fresh round of American airstrikes.

Kuwait’s military said its air defences were engaging hostile projectiles and that any explosions heard were the result of intercepting attacks. Explosions were also heard in Bahrain’s capital moments after air raid sirens sounded. Authorities in both countries reported no immediate casualties or significant damage.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility, stating it had launched missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. military sites in both Gulf nations specifically the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and the Ali Al‑Salem air base in Kuwait. The IRGC described the operation as retaliation for U.S. strikes on Iranian territory, which Washington said were carried out in response to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi Arabia strongly condemned Iran’s actions, describing them as repeated aggressions that violate the sovereignty of its neighbours and breach international law. The Kingdom demanded an immediate halt to the attacks and reiterated its full solidarity with Kuwait and Bahrain. The Gulf Cooperation Council also denounced the strikes as a “blatant aggression” that poses a direct threat to regional security.

The cross‑border attacks represent the most serious breach of the fragile US‑Iran ceasefire since it was struck last month. The exchange of fire has raised fears that the conflict could widen across the Gulf, threatening the security of one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.
