Iran-US Tensions Rise After Tehran Alleges Breach of Peace Deal

TEHRAN — Iran on Saturday accused the United States of a “blatant violation” of the peace deal reached between the two sides, following American strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance facilities.

“These brutal attacks, which targeted Iranian coastal surveillance facilities, are a blatant violation” of the memorandum of understanding to end the war, the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The US military said its forces struck Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar locations on Friday in response to an Iranian attack on a cargo ship transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The incident marks the first major test of the fragile peace agreement that both sides signed last week. The deal, which includes a 60‑day negotiating window, had raised hopes of a lasting end to the war that began with US‑Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. Friday’s attack on the cargo ship and the subsequent US response suggest that tensions remain high and the implementation of the peace deal is on shaky ground. Iranian officials have not yet indicated whether they will take further action in response to the US strikes.
