Why Burkina Faso Ended Diplomatic Relations with Former Colonial Power France

ABIDJAN — Burkina Faso’s ruling junta announced on Friday that it had severed diplomatic relations with former colonial ruler France, accusing Paris of persistently acting against its interests.

“The government of Burkina Faso hereby informs the national and international community that it has decided to sever diplomatic relations with France with effect from today, June 26, 2026,” the military regime said in a statement read on national television.

The junta accused France of harbouring “neo-colonial ambitions, made evident by its active support for subversive networks and the terrorists who are plunging our country and the Sahel into mourning.” Burkina Faso, like several neighbours, has been hit by deadly violence from jihadist groups for over a decade.

The decision comes as anti‑French sentiment runs high in some former African colonies, with Russian and Chinese influence growing across the continent. France, once master of vast swathes of West and Central Africa, has vowed to abandon the “Françafrique” strategy, under which Paris maintained influence through political collusion and exclusive business access.

The junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré since 2022, said the move concerns only institutional diplomatic ties and “in no way calls into question the historical, human, cultural and social ties” between the peoples of both countries.

The decision follows a pattern of regional realignment, with several Sahel countries having turned away from France toward new partners in recent years. It is unclear how the move will affect ongoing security cooperation or French development assistance.
