Curfew in Portions of Downtown Paris, Other Towns After Riots in France

French police imposed overnight curfews in areas of central Paris and elsewhere after a weekend of riots and looting across the country. A restriction on unauthorized meetings has also been introduced in numerous other locations of the city center.

Partial curfews limiting the movement of young people and meetings were issued in cities including Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, and Lyon in the south, and Lille and other towns in the north.

Earlier, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who has been heavily lambasted by opposition MPs over the preparedness for the disturbance but whose resignation was refused by President Emmanuel Macron, confessed police had “lost control” in several areas.

The protests began last month when students demanded improved conditions at schools but have now expanded to encompass a wider range of grievances, with turnout at demonstrations this weekend boosted by trade unions and diverse protest organizations.

Officials reported that more than 2,500 people have been arrested. One demonstrator had his hand blasted off by a police crowd-control grenade, AFP news agency said. About 1,000 police officers were hurt.

The prime minister said local mayors were being given the ability to impose curfews “where they need during a crisis conference on Monday, but did not say which cities they would be imposed in.
