Saudi Arabia to Increase Aid to Yemen With Large Projects During Yemeni Leader’s Trip

RIYADH: Saudi aid agency KSrelief on Tuesday launched a new package of humanitarian projects estimated to help more than 3.4 million people in Yemen during a visit by Rashad Al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, to its offices in Riyadh.

The measures, including emergency food assistance, shelter, clean water and healthcare, were announced with 100 Saudi volunteer projects set to benefit another 265,000 people, the Saudi Press Agency stated.

The news comes as fresh conflict between Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Houthi militia has displaced more than 276,000 people since June, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Taiz received the most displaced people, followed by Lahj and Aden, adding strain to towns already dealing with shortages of food, water and basic services, the UN agency said.

Projects began on Tuesday included the distribution of 250,000 food baskets, 25,000 emergency shelter kits and 17,500 tents for displaced families.

The package also included projects to give over 16 million litres of water to Lahj, Taiz and Aden, as well as medical supplies, equipment and pharmaceuticals for Yemen’s health sector.

The 100 volunteer programs will provide specialised medical treatments such as open-heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, cataract therapy, cochlear implants and hearing rehabilitation.
