Macron Promises Order Calls Foreign Criticism of Unrest Stupid

President Emmanuel Macron vowed Wednesday to prevent a repeat of last weekend’s bloodshed at protests planned in the coming days, dismissing as “stupid” and “unacceptable” comments from some foreign leaders regarding the turmoil.

The country’s biggest student union, UNEF, has called for fresh demonstrations Saturday, while the Yellow Vest group, which emerged as a powerful anti-establishment force in 2018, has filed for a march through central Paris the same day.

Efforts to ease social tensions made little headway as unions vowed to hold a national strike on November 5 to protest the high cost of living and cuts to public services after government negotiations ended inconclusively.

France plunged into some of the worst urban turmoil in years on October 17, with widespread protests startling the nation with their scale and the apparent inability of police to contain them. Those who want to create disorder in city centers next Saturday will be stopped from doing this,” Macron told reporters on a visit to Qatar.

US president Donald Trump, for example, has blamed immigration without presenting evidence, and said the turmoil was a warning for Americans. Asked if he was talking to Trump, Macron answered: Among others. He claimed some foreign leaders wanted to profit politically from France. He said foreign disinformation in the aftermath led many individuals, including foreign leaders, to make comments that were as terrible as they were stupid.
