Multiple Dead and Injured in Huge Fire at Canadian Military Base

Several individuals were killed or injured in a major fire near a Canadian military base in Alberta, the country’s military reported.

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) said it was assessing the full nature of the impact of the incident and would not provide details of dead and injuries until that was complete.

The fire broke out Saturday at about 4 p.m. local time (10 p.m. GMT) at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, one of the country’s busiest military training bases.

A live-fire training exercise struck a gas line or gas well, killing at least seven people and injuring scores, according to unnamed military officials cited by Canada’s Global News television network.

Defence Minister David McGuinty said the CAF and local authorities were handling the blaze, calling the situation “very, very active and delicate”.

“My thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected, stated Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported that Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton has issued a code orange, a disaster-response strategy for a high-casualty scenario.

Otherwise, you’ll inundate the health care facilities in Edmonton, says Warren Thirsk, an emergency department doctor there, speaking to the broadcaster. Local authorities have urged residents to avoid the area and give all emergency vehicles right of way.
