UAE Unveils Landmark Labour Reform for Delivery Driver Working Hours
ABU DHABI — The UAE has issued a landmark clarification on working hours for delivery drivers, stating that riders cannot be compelled to work during the restricted midday break if they do not wish to do so, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation confirmed to Khaleej Times.
As part of the Occupational Heat Stress Prevention Policy widely known as the midday break the ministry also banned delivery on foot from 12:30pm to 3pm between June 15 and September 15 to protect workers from the peak summer heat. The policy is intended to safeguard workers during the hottest months of the year.
There are exemptions for certain activities that require work to continue for technical reasons. However, companies carrying out exempted work must provide shaded areas to protect workers from direct sunlight during breaks, along with cooling equipment such as fans, drinking water, hydration supplements including salts, comfort facilities, and first-aid equipment.
The ministry said compliance will be monitored through smart digital tools, field inspection campaigns, and awareness initiatives, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to occupational health and safety standards while maintaining productivity.
Members of the public can report violations through the MoHRE’s call centre on 600590000, the ministry’s website, or its smart application.
