Israel Says Viral Image of Soldier Attacking Jesus Statue in Lebanon is Genuine
JERUSALEM — The Israeli military has confirmed that a viral image showing an Israeli soldier striking a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon is authentic.
The photograph, widely shared on social media, appears to show a soldier using a sledgehammer to hit the head of a crucified Jesus statue that had fallen off its cross. The incident reportedly took place in the Christian village of Debl, near the Lebanese border with Israel.
In a post on its official X account Monday, the Israel Defense Forces said it viewed the incident with “great severity,” adding that the soldier’s conduct “is wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops.” The military said the Northern Command is investigating and that “appropriate measures will be taken.”
The IDF also said it is working with the local community to “restore the statue to its place.”
Debl’s municipality told AFP the statue was located in the village but could not immediately confirm whether it had been damaged. Israeli troops have remained in parts of southern Lebanon despite a ceasefire that took effect Friday.
