Second Malaysian Detained in Indonesia Over Alleged Drug Smuggling
SURABAYA, Indonesia — Indonesian authorities have arrested a second Malaysian in days for allegedly smuggling methamphetamine and ecstasy into the country, a crime that carries the death penalty under Indonesian law.
A 22-year-old identified only as “DI” was detained in Surabaya on Monday shortly after arriving on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, said Novi Manunggal, head of the airport security task force. Officials found “methamphetamine and ecstasy pills attached to the suspect’s body,” including 990 grams of crystal meth and 1,089 ecstasy pills, according to the statement.
The suspect has been charged with smuggling more than five grams of drugs, which carries a death sentence in Indonesia. The country maintains some of the world’s toughest anti-drug laws but has observed a moratorium on executions for several years. The last executions for drug offenses were carried out in 2016.
The arrest follows the detention of a 39-year-old Malaysian pilot last week at Jakarta’s airport with more than 70,000 ecstasy tablets in his suitcase. The pilot had just flown a passenger plane from Malaysia and subsequently tested positive for several illegal drugs.
