NATO Shoots Down Drone in Lithuania as Security Tensions Rise

NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that entered Lithuanian airspace on Tuesday, President Gitanas Nauseda announced, the latest in a series of aerial incursions the Baltic states have reported since Russia’s war on Ukraine began.

Nauseda confirmed the drone was destroyed by NATO fighter jets shortly after entering Lithuanian territory, calling that kind of readiness essential for the region as Russia continues to intensify its aggression against Ukraine. According to Lithuanian public radio LRT, citing the country’s National Crisis Management Center, the drone came down in a rural area near Lake Kaunas in central Lithuania.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys thanked allied forces whose presence he said helps protect the country’s skies and strengthens its security, describing the interception as a clear example of allied unity and resolve, signaling that NATO remains vigilant, committed and ready to respond.

Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, all NATO members bordering Russia, have repeatedly reported drone incursions tied to the ongoing conflict. In May, a NATO fighter shot down a Ukrainian drone over Estonia, marking the first time the alliance’s air policing mission had intercepted a foreign drone over Baltic airspace since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.
