TEHRAN — Iran’s parliament has formally introduced legislation concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a move that comes as tensions between Tehran and Washington escalate over the vital waterway.

The “Strategic Action for the Security and Sustainable Progress of the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Gulf” bill was submitted to parliament on Tuesday, coinciding with the downing of US drones, according to Ebrahim Azizi, head of parliament’s security committee.

“The bill was formally introduced in Iran’s Parliament last night,” Azizi wrote on social media platform X.

The legislative push underscores growing friction between Iran and the United States over the strait, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes. The waterway remains a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies.

Details of the proposed legislation remain under review, though its introduction signals Iran’s intent to assert greater control over the strategic passage amid mounting regional instability.
