Industry Leaders Say the Race for AI is Picking up, Not Slowing Down

Despite warnings from some of the industry’s most famous players to slow down, technology executives said the worldwide race to build artificial intelligence (AI) will keep accelerating. I don’t see it slowing down too much, said Matt Swalley, senior director for AI and HPC data storage infrastructure at Vdura, who describes the area as ‘a race to see who can develop these things the fastest’.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman allegedly told staff the company is considering delaying frontier AI development and expects other labs will do the same, though some may disagree. “I think this is a good time to take a breath, Altman remarked in an interview with Time.

He has also floated the idea that prominent labs may soon announce a deal to limit development and address growing safety concerns. Jakub Pachocki, head scientist at OpenAI, has called on companies to coordinate slowdowns when needed, and more than 1,000 personnel at prominent AI startups signed a petition in July advocating for a method to restrict progress. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has likewise said frontier enterprises need to slow down, but only enough to stay ahead of China. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has said safety safeguards may be built into existing AI systems without delaying development.

Control doesn’t mean slowing down; it means securing and building trust in that AI. None of them will kill the innovation. AI is not a hype, it is the right tool,” he remarked on the sidelines of the AI Everything exhibition hosted in Abu Dhabi, adding that organisations are attending.
