The Rs 49 Billion Chennai Metro stretch was opened by Modi
Dubai: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened a new section of the Chennai Metro’s Phase II network. The new section, which was built at a cost of Rs 49 billion, is a big step forward for public transport in Tamil Nadu.
The first train on the Poonamallee-Vadapalani line was flagged off by Modi and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Porur Bypass Road Metro station. They then rode the train to Poonamallee and back as a surprise.
Before boarding, the Prime Minister used the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to buy his ticket. During the trip, he talked to workers and students and was told about the new Metro system by officials.
Governor Rajendra Arlekar, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, BJP leader Nainar Nagenthran, and other key figures met him at the airport. Modi also opened and sank the first stones of national highway projects worth about Rs 37 billion.
The 36 km, four-lane Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744 and the 30 km Madurai Ring Road section of NH-744A were built to improve connectivity and reduce traffic.
He also laid the first stone in the ground for the NH-83 four-lane Thiruvarur Bypass. Modi opened four projects at Chennai Port: a storage yard, export-import warehouses, a Seafarers Club and an improved cruise station.
