Democrats know Heartbreak in Texas can Talarico Change it?
The Texas campaign for a U.S. Senate seat is a potential linchpin in deciding which party controls Congress next year – a big prize in itself — but for both parties it is so much more than that.
For the Democrats, their losing run in statewide races now extends back more than three decades. In America’s second largest state, leftists have been in the desert for a generation.
But polls show his challenger, 37-year-old James Talarico, may be poised to pull off a breakthrough, turning a Texas Senate seat blue for the first time since 1988.
That would be a wonderful scenario for Democrats and possible nightmare for Republicans. I think if the Democrats pull it off it’s going to cause a lot of soul searching and a lot of psychological damage to the Republican Party in Texas and nationwide,” said Brendan Steinhauser, a Republican campaign consultant based in Texas.
Those high stakes go a long way toward explaining how this Senate campaign has catapulted to become the most expensive in US history, with total spending topping more than half a billion dollars.
For Talarico, it’s been a meteoric rise for a politician who in 2025 was an obscure state-level democrat.
The former teacher, who was softly spoken and studied to be a Christian minister, drew a line that snaked around the Fiesta Center in Lubbock, Texas, Tuesday night and down the huge parking lot to a major road.
