Donald Tusk Tough Tone ‘no Compromise’ on Rule of law Following Confrontation with Tribunal

Prime Minister Donald Tusk promised in a televised statement on Saturday evening to resolve the country’s worsening Constitutional Tribunal issue, as tensions over Poland’s judiciary reached boiling point, saying the rule of law will triumph over violence.

The row over the make-up of Poland’s highest court has escalated to an open confrontation with President Karol Nawrocki who on Friday nite attempted to enter the Tribunal building in impasse over the appointment of new judges.

The standoff was shown live on television as police surrounded the building, bringing outside attention to the problem from outside of Poland and into the greater political discussion in Europe.

The opposition has accused Tusk’s government of trying to stage a coup, while the government claims it is moving ahead with long-needed reforms to restore the rule of law following years of PiS meddling in the judiciary. His government had attempted to defuse the problem but its ideas were rebuffed by PiS and the president, which further deepened the dispute, Tusk added.

He said the legislative majority waited for the tenure of judges nominated during the previous PiS government to expire to avoid a clash.

We waited patiently for the new judges to be appointed, until the terms of their predecessors appointed by PiS expired. “The Sejm made a choice, the judges took the oath, but the president did not deign to accept that oath, Tusk stated.
