After a $6.3bn Hack, Crypto Company Binance Pays out 90% of the Losses

Binance, the world’s biggest crypto exchange, said it has recovered 90% of the $6.3bn (£4.7bn) of assets stolen in a cyberattack on Thursday. The company noted that the remaining 10% might take longer to source in the requisite volumes.

Binance has repeatedly declared it will cover 100% of the damages from what is thought to be crypto’s biggest heist on record, and says it has set aside more than $6.34bn in corporate capital to do so. “Binance will absorb the financial consequences of these stolen funds, not our users,” the business said in a statement on Saturday.

Binance said on Sunday that it had resumed withdrawals on several of its networks after the hack led to suspensions. Earlier, it had announced it will restart withdrawals in phases.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Saturday blamed North Korea for the attack. Two analytics businesses earlier informed the BBC they had strong intelligence pointing to North Korean state-backed hacking squad, the Lazarus Group, also known as TraderTraitor – expressly named by the FBI  as the likely offenders.

Binance stated it used numerous funds and its own business coffers to cover the stolen assets.

The company said it covers all holdings of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether, as well as seven other popular crypto assets.

The FBI stated it had seen hackers turning stolen funds into a sort of cryptocurrency called Ethereum, and it is likely the assets will subsequently be turned again utilising decentralised finance and quick exchange services.
