Seven Killed in Jordanian Air Strikes on Syria Militant Hideouts

The Syrian state news agency quoted the director of the health authorities in the southern province as claiming that seven people were killed in Jordanian air strikes on multiple locations in the Deraa countryside early Tuesday.

In a preliminary investigation, the Syrian Civil Defense stated the dead included three children and one woman. Three people were injured, adding that rescue services responded to four places affected by the attacks in the countryside of Deraa and Sweida provinces.

On Monday, Jordan said its air force bombed what it called militant hideouts in southern Syria, saying it had determined the suspects behind last week’s deadly church attack in the kingdom were linked to “terrorist groups” operating there. The armed forces stated the operation was carried out in conjunction with Damascus.

Syria’s government provided a conflicting narrative in a statement, claiming it has begun a probe into the Jordanian attacks and stressed the need for field and security coordination in border areas. Before any coordination with Jordan, Damascus expressed to Jordan its “total reservation” about the strikes, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Syrian General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs said in a statement that Syria closed the Nassib border crossing with Jordan on Tuesday, stopping passenger and commercial traffic in both directions, citing developments on the ground in Deraa province, shortly after the strikes. Nassib is the sole passenger and commercial border crossing between Syria and Jordan.
