American Officials Say They Helped Gulf Countries Ship 1.5 Billion Barrels of Oil Through the Strait of Hormuz

RIYADH: The US Central Command said on Sunday it had helped Gulf countries export 1.5 billion barrels of oil via the Strait of Hormuz since summer, circumventing an Iranian embargo.

CENTCOM said in a statement released on X that US forces helped Gulf partners export more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil since summer.

More than 3,000 commercial vessels have transited the Strait of Hormuz safely with support from CENTCOM forces over the past six months, it continued, saying “over 95 percent of ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz have done so safely.

Primary transit routes in the Strait of Hormuz are today free and clear of Iranian sea mines thanks to incredible efforts by our people,” said CENTCOM head Admiral Brad Cooper, visiting US forces in Hormuz.

Iran has taken control of the crucial canal since the Middle East war erupted with US-Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic on February 28.

It requires authorization for ships to pass through the strait, through which a fifth of world oil exports regularly flow.

This month, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted that Iran has “lost complete control” of the Strait of Hormuz and claimed that Tehran’s economy was “in total and complete freefall.”

The Strait of Hormuz is open. Practically as much oil is coming out now as before this battle began. So they lost all control of the Straits,” he said.

Crude oil shipments approached pre-war levels in September, with the region exporting at least 16.5 million barrels, excluding Iran, according to marine surveillance service.
