Macron Calls Deadly Shooting in Paris Racist Terrorist Attack
French President Emmanuel Macron has called a shooting in a Paris suburb that killed one and wounded five others a racist terrorist attack.
This is a turning point in the life of our Republic and our nation, Macron said, adding that it was the first time ever that a random racial assassination had taken place.
The attack lasted about 15 minutes and the perpetrator fired from his automobile, first in Trappes to the southwest of Paris and later in nearby La Verrière, apparently targeting persons of migrant origin. He was then arrested.
Three of the wounded are still in serious condition, including a 12-year-old girl. Macron said they were targeted because of their skin color or religion and asked the population not to give an inch in the face of what he called “ideologies gaining root, in Trappes, where the attack happened.
The specific motive is not known, but the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) claimed it appeared to be “murder linked to a terrorist enterprise”.
French media have identified the suspect as Kevin T, who had four previous convictions that PNAT says were automatically expunged.
Local media said the 39-year-old was known to police but not to France’s intelligence services. On Friday morning, an individual fired shots from his car at several people he encountered,” said Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes.
Witnesses said the gunman traveled through many neighborhoods in a grey Renault Clio. “He shot randomly with the intention of getting as many casualties as possible. He wanted carnage,” Rabeh told him.
