After only Five Days on the job, Katie Zacharia resigned from her White House Position
White House press secretary Katie Zacharia is soon leave her role, the BBC has confirmed, as the repercussions from her rocky public debut appear to have peaked. President Donald Trump told reporters moments before word of her leaving broke on Friday that he had told her “you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to” and “honestly, if I were you, I’d reconsider”.
Zacharia was criticised for her first press briefing on Tuesday, which lasted less than 15 minutes and included only three questions from reporters. In the days that followed, she was on the defensive, taking difficult questions from the national media about her qualifications and readiness for the post.
Early Friday afternoon, during a press gaggle outside Marine One, Trump alluded to her imminent departure. I said, ‘Is this for you Katie? “Because honestly you don’t need this,” Trump remarked.”You don’t have to be treated this badly,” he added, saying he thought the media had treated her “pretty nastily.”
Zacharia’s rocky week began Tuesday, after a 14-minute debut at the White House press briefing, where she seemed clearly anxious, read talking points from a notepad, answered only a few questions, and referred to her husband as the president.
During the briefing, a reporter asked Zacharia, whom Trump and others have described as an attorney and a graduate of Pepperdine University’s law school, where she took the bar exam. To practise law in the US, an attorney must pass a gruelling exam to be admitted to a state’s bar association.
