80 Countries Unite at UN to Condemn Iranian Attacks on Neighbors
As the UN General Assembly session continues in New York, on Thursday, around 80 countries came in support of condemning Iran and its Houthi allies for attacks on its neighbours, demanding the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting international trade.
Bahrain’s foreign minister, during a media conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, said Iran’s threats “remain very real and continue to grow” in the Middle East.
Paying heartfelt condolences to the lives lost in the Iranian and Houthi attacks, he said, “I extend my sincere condolences … to all those who have lost innocent lives as a result of this ongoing threat.”
A joint statement delivered by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani at the UN noted, “Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to threaten international security and navigational rights and freedoms.”
Countries Condemn Houthi Attacks
“We also strongly condemn the Houthis’ decision to resume conflict in Yemen, their continuous strikes on Saudi Arabia and their reckless attacks in the Red Sea.”
Earlier this month, the Iran-backed Houthi group took control of areas near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
This move results in increased risks to international shipping, maritime security and global trade.
Reading out the joint statement at the Assembly, Al-Zayani said, “The Houthis’ advance toward Bab Al-Mandeb will only heighten risks to international shipping, maritime security and global trade through this critical waterway.”
Last month, UN chief Antonio Guterres warned that disrupting major global trade routes leads to additional strain on food prices, which will result in higher prices, deepening hunger, and weaker harvests globally.
“Commercial shipping and seafarers must never be used as leverage, and we condemn Iran’s actions that put innocent lives at risk,” the joint statement said. Al-Zayani said a political solution is the way forward.
