SpaceX Targets Historic First Orbital Flight for Starship

SpaceX is set to make history by sending the world’s largest and most powerful rocket and spacecraft into Earth’s orbit on Monday. It will also be the first Starship mission to make money for SpaceX.

The launch window of the 14th Starship test flight is scheduled to open at 8:15 a.m. ET (7:15 a.m. CT/ 12.15UTC)on 28th September from SpaceX’s Starbase in Cameron County, Texas.  The mission is expected to last close to 10 hours if it proceeds according to plan.

Starship Set for First Orbital Attempt

Unlike Starship’s previous 13 integrated test flights, which followed suborbital trajectories, Flight 14 is designed to take the upper-stage spacecraft into orbit around Earth.

SpaceX plans to send Starship to an altitude of about 275 kilometres, aiming for about six orbits.

The spacecraft will then perform a controlled re-entry before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean west of Chile. Neither the Super Heavy booster nor the Starship spacecraft is planned for recovery on this mission.

The mission will also carry 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites. They are expected to be deployed after Starship reaches orbit, giving SpaceX an opportunity to test the new satellite design during an actual orbital mission.

Reaching Orbit Is The Biggest Challenge

The most demanding part of the Starship’s latest test is to reach orbit, requiring the spacecraft to handle changing gravitational forces while maintaining the precise speed and trajectory needed for orbital flight.

Kathleen Curlee, a Senior Analyst at Georgetown University’s Centre for Security and Emerging Technology, told AFP that the process involves “more forces and more complex calculations.”

SpaceX is trying to reach a circular orbit of about 275km (171 miles ) above the Earth, which requires a speed of about 28,000 km/ hour. It is achieved; then the spacecraft would attempt to deploy satellites designed to expand the company’s already massive satellite Internet constellation.

“Starship will deliver 26 Starlink V3 satellites to orbit for the first time, which aim to greatly expand the network’s capacity and user speeds,” SpaceX wrote.

For SpaceX, however, Monday’s test has a more immediate objective: proving that Starship can move beyond short test flights and operate in orbit for an extended period. The company has described the flight as its first attempt to reach orbit, making the outcome an important test of the rocket’s development.
