Saudi Arabia Strengthens Early Warning Capabilities to Protect Communities

Saudi Arabia, represented by its National Center for Meteorology, joined the rest of the Arab world in marking Arab Meteorological Day on September 15, an occasion that underscores the value of investing in weather forecasting and warning systems.

The day also spotlights how modern technology and human expertise work together to protect lives and property, strengthen preparedness for severe weather, and support broader sustainable development goals. Saudi Arabia was the driving force behind establishing the observance in the first place, submitting the original proposal to the Arab Permanent Committee for Meteorology back in 2019. The committee settled on September 15 as the annual date to help coordinate efforts and align meteorological goals across the Arab world.

Since then, the National Center for Meteorology has made notable progress strengthening the Kingdom’s early warning system, working more closely with related agencies, improving the accuracy of its forecasts, and raising public awareness of weather and climate-related risks. That work builds on Saudi Arabia’s earlier commitment to the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All initiative, which aims to ensure every person on the planet is covered by an effective warning system by 2027.

The Kingdom continues to position itself as an active regional and international partner on climate issues, framing its investment in forecasting and early warning capabilities as part of a broader push toward a safer and more sustainable future.
