US-Iran Conflict Deepens as Donald Trump Cancels Peace Talks

Hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough in the US-Israeli war with Iran dimmed over the weekend as President Donald Trump scrapped a planned trip to Islamabad by his envoys, while Iranian officials returned home from mediation talks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi flew back from Pakistan, describing the visit as “very fruitful,” but no agreement was reached. Tehran has largely closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil, while Washington maintains a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Speaking after the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ dinner, Trump said he canceled the envoys’ trip because Iran’s offer was “not enough” and the travel too costly. On Truth Social, he claimed Iran’s leadership is in “tremendous infighting and confusion.”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Pakistan’s prime minister that Tehran would not enter “imposed negotiations” under threats or blockade, insisting the US must first remove obstacles.

The war, which began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, has killed thousands, driven up oil prices, and destabilized the Middle East. A fragile ceasefire remains in place, but no end to the conflict is in sight.
