US and Saudi Arabia Sign Nuclear Agreement to Strengthen Strategic Partnership
RIYADH — Saudi Arabia and the United States signed a cooperation agreement on Wednesday for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, formalizing a deal that strengthens strategic ties between the two nations.
The agreement, known as a “123 agreement,” was signed by Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman and US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, alongside a bilateral safeguards agreement. The deal is required for Washington to engage in nuclear cooperation with another country.
The agreement builds on the historic strategic partnership between the US and Saudi Arabia, following Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s announcement during a visit to Washington last November that bilateral negotiations on peaceful nuclear cooperation had concluded successfully.
The deal aims to facilitate the exchange of expertise, knowledge, and technologies while ensuring the highest international standards for nuclear safety, security, and nonproliferation.
“These agreements reflect our two nations’ shared commitment to strengthening US-Saudi commercial relations, delivering prosperity at home and security to our allies abroad,” Wright said in a statement.
