Trump to give Putin briefing on death of plague lab worker in Russia

US President Donald Trump said he would soon talk to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin about the death of a lab worker at a plague research center in Siberia.“We’re having very deep discussions so far, Trump said, adding that he’d be able to report on his talks with Putin “probably” on Thursday. We are not planning a phone call, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Russian officials say they are investigating the cause of the death of the 28-year-old, and have not confirmed that the suspected disease is pneumonic plague a serious lung infection, often described as the most virulent form of plague. There is no epidemic risk for the population, they maintain.

But the United States has sent Russia a formal of diplomatic message asking for more information. Peskov said he was unaware of such a request.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has called on Russia to be more transparent.Timely, complete and transparent information has  sharing under the International Health Regulations is essential to clarify conflicting reports and to enable an accurate assessment of potential public health risks,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman told reporters Wednesday that the Russia’s reporting of the death to the WHO was in line with standard practice. He accused the media of publishing ‘false information.
