Saudi Captain among three Saudis slain in Riyadh Airport Bombings

Three Saudi Arabian nationals were killed in attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 8, the kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said in a statement. Attacks targeted airport facilities and a Saudia plane.

Saudia said one of the victims was its employee Captain Hamoud Ali Alkalthami. The airline said it was “grateful for his contributions throughout his career with the national flag carrier and the lasting impression he left on his colleagues”. It offered its heartfelt sympathies to the family.

A number of Saudi citizens and residents of various nationalities also experienced injuries ranging from minor to serious during the attack on the airport, the Saudi aviation authority said, adding the attacks also caused some material damage. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and the injured were brought to hospital for medical treatment, it added.

Saudi Arabia said flights and operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh were back to normal by 6 pm on October 8. Saudi Arabia’s GACA also said in a statement that airport operations have restarted and aviation traffic was back to normal.

The attack damaged one of Saudi Arabia’s aircraft while on the ground at the airport, the national flag carrier stated, confirming no passengers were on the aircraft.
