WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Thursday that the United States does not need a deal with Iran to obtain enriched uranium from the country, asserting that Iran could not prevent US access if Washington chose to act.

“We could get it right now. I don’t think they could stop us if we wanted, but there’s no reason to. It’s entombed,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Trump also said he has no desire to meet with Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. However, he left the door open for a future meeting if a broader agreement is reached. “If it happened … I’d be respectful,” he said.

The remarks come as stalled negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue, with the Middle East conflict and the fate of the Strait of Hormuz remaining unresolved.
