School Shooting in Thailand Leaves Community in Shock
BANGKOK — A student opened fire at a school in Nonthaburi province, just north of Bangkok, on Friday, killing at least seven people and wounding more than a dozen others in one of Thailand’s deadliest school shootings in recent years.
The attack took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, a well-known secondary school with approximately 3,000 students. According to Thailand’s disaster prevention and mitigation office, the deceased include three teachers, three students, and the gunman. At least 15 others were injured.
Police identified the perpetrator as a student at the school. Reports indicate the gunman first fatally shot his grandparents with his grandfather’s handgun before going to the school, where he fired 26 rounds and killed three teachers and three students. Authorities said the gunman then took his own life. Additional ammunition was found at the scene.
The incident was reported around 10 a.m. local time, prompting a major response from police, special operations units, and rescue workers. Students and staff were evacuated as emergency personnel transported the wounded to nearby hospitals. Police initially warned people to stay away from the area.
Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Southeast Asia, with an estimated 10 million firearms in circulation. In February, a teacher was killed and a student wounded in a school shooting in southern Thailand. In 2022, 36 people, including 24 children, were killed in a massacre at a child care center in the northeast.
