NEW YORK — Basketball fans at Madison Square Garden greeted President Donald Trump with a chorus of loud boos on Monday as he became the first sitting US president to attend the NBA Finals. Trump, a guest of Knicks president James Dolan, smiled as the sellout crowd jeered when he appeared on the Jumbotron during the national anthem.

“I thought it was amazing, actually,” Trump told reporters later.

The visit snarled midtown Manhattan with extraordinary security, slowing entry for ticket‑holders. “I wish he wasn’t here. He’s not a real fan, and he’s just making things awful,” said Brooklyn resident Errol Ismail.

The Knicks, leading the series 2‑0, lost to the San Antonio Spurs 115‑111, cutting their lead to 2‑1. A‑list fans including Spike Lee, Derek Jeter, and Ben Stiller attended. The traditional outdoor watch party was canceled due to security concerns.

Trump’s approval rating held near the lowest of his political career, at 35 percent, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed Monday.
