Ex-PM Imran Khan Sent Back to Jail Following Hospital Medical Checks

More than 750 US service members have been wounded during military operations against Iran since the conflict began in February, according to Pentagon data that highlights the mounting human and financial toll of the war.

Of the 757 troops reported wounded, over 580 are Army soldiers. The remaining figures include 86 sailors, 64 airmen, and 19 Marines, based on the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System. The database also records 18 US service members killed since the conflict began on February 28 with joint US and Israeli strikes against Iran.

Most of the wounded are categorized under casualties from “Operation Epic Fury,” the conflict’s official name. However, the Pentagon introduced a new category called “Overseas Operations” in its casualty database in late July, following the conclusion of Operation Epic Fury, with subsequent casualties now classified separately.

Officials have released limited details about how service members were injured or the extent of damage to US bases hit during Iranian attacks. They have confirmed, though, that the vast majority of injuries are traumatic brain injuries, typically linked to blast waves from missile and drone strikes.

The rising casualty count comes alongside escalating financial costs. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers last month that the direct cost of the war had reached approximately $37.5 billion — the first time the Pentagon has publicly disclosed a cost figure for the conflict. The administration has also requested tens of billions of dollars in additional funding to sustain ongoing operations in the Middle East, including an emergency request of about $87.6 billion, with roughly $67 billion earmarked for the Pentagon to cover munitions, operational expenses, and classified programs.

Now approaching its sixth month, the conflict continues without a ceasefire or broader agreement to end hostilities. US forces remain actively engaged in operations aimed at sustaining pressure on Iran, while the Pentagon has offered little public detail on the full scope of damage to American facilities or the specific circumstances behind individual casualties — leaving the casualty database as one of the few official sources documenting the war’s impact on US forces.

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was returned to jail early Friday, just hours after being taken to a private hospital for court-ordered medical checks, according to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.

“A team of qualified doctors … declared him medically fit. After the completion of this entire process, he was transferred back to Adiala Jail,” Tarar wrote on X, referring to the 73-year-old’s health checks at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad.

Khan, Pakistan’s most popular politician, was moved to the hospital on Supreme Court orders, according to his party. Hundreds of police were deployed near the hospital, some carrying sticks, with roads leading to the facility cordoned off. Zulfi Bukhari, a spokesman for Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, confirmed his arrival at the hospital, saying the court’s order had been complied with. Former president and PTI member Arif Alvi also confirmed the transfer, saying the country was celebrating the news.

Dozens of Khan’s supporters gathered outside the hospital, some throwing red flower petals at passing cars. Younus Qureshi, 69, said he came to show support for “the man who has made so many sacrifices for Pakistan,” while 52-year-old Bilal expressed hope that Khan, a former World Cup-winning cricket captain, would receive proper medical care, adding that supporters’ loyalty to him remains unwavering.

Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced late last year to 17 years in prison on corruption and other charges. Khan, jailed since 2023, has consistently maintained the charges were politically motivated. His legal team had petitioned the Supreme Court citing his poor health, prompting the court to order his hospitalization within two days. Earlier this year, Khan received eye treatment, with his family saying at the time he had lost most of the vision in his right eye.

The court’s order also grants Khan weekly family visits and twice-weekly phone calls with his sons, along with the formation of a specialist panel for his treatment that includes his sister, physician Uzma Khan.

Khan served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022 before being removed in a no-confidence vote amid tensions between his government and Pakistan’s military establishment. His 2023 arrest sparked nationwide protests across the country.
