Gaza Health Officials Report 4 Killed in Latest Israeli Strikes
Gaza health officials said Saturday that Israeli fire killed at least four people in the territory, including a 10-year-old girl and the son of a senior Gaza health ministry official.
According to a statement from Gaza’s health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority, the child died from wounds sustained that morning from Israeli army fire north of the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza. Separately, an airstrike killed Baseer al-Barsh, son of Munir al-Barsh, the ministry’s director-general, in a displacement camp in Jabalia in northern Gaza. Speaking at his son’s funeral, Munir al-Barsh described the killing as a continuation of what he called Israel’s crimes, according to the ministry statement.
Two additional Palestinians were killed and several others injured in two separate strikes near Gaza City, according to Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital and the territory’s Hamas-run civil defense agency. The Israeli army did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the strikes.
Israel agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire in October last year, but has since advanced further into Gaza. The broader Israeli offensive has left much of the territory in ruins and killed more than 73,800 people, according to figures from Gaza’s health ministry that the United Nations considers generally reliable. Since the ceasefire was announced, Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,300 people, according to the same source, while the Israeli military has reported five deaths within its own ranks over the same period, along with the death of one civilian contractor.
