Democrat Backs Republican in Critical Michigan Senate Ethnicity as Party Feud Rages

A Michigan Democrat has thrown her support behind the Republican nominee in the state’s important US Senate race as a feud with her own party’s candidate Abdul El-Sayed deteriorated just days before the election.

Democratic Senate nominee El-Sayed defeated sitting congresswoman Haley Stevens in the primary. But Stevens made a surprise appearance with Republican challenger Mike Rogers on Sunday. “I don’t belong in Abdul’s campaign,” she remarked in a video posted on X shortly after that appearance. “Hate is not who we are as Michiganders and that’s what we’re getting from our Democratic nominee right now.”“That’s why I’m supporting Mike Rogers,” Stevens remarked.

Stevens’ decision to desert the party and shift her support just two days before the election startled many of her fellow Democrats, with one calling it a “despicable betrayal”.

The public feud between moderate Democrat Stevens and El-Sayed, who represents the party’s left-wing, has boiled over in recent days.

Stevens asked El-Sayed to repudiate an independent liberal group’s campaign ad that connected US backing for Israel to high costs. El-Sayed said he had no involvement in the substance of the advertisement and condemned it.

Stevens was set to appear with El-Sayed at an event Sunday to show party unity, but she reportedly begged her to stay away and instead attended a church service with his Republican opponent.
