Tunis Faces Flood Threat After Torrential Rain, Schools Suspend Classes
Torrential rain swept through Tunis on Thursday, raising fears of flooding and prompting the city to suspend classes at schools and universities as a precaution.
Severe thunderstorms broke out following a stretch of extreme heat, drenching the Tunisian capital and surrounding areas, with hail reported in some locations. The storms disrupted traffic and left water pooling on roads and sidewalks across the city. In Tunis’s old medina, water rushed through the narrow streets as shoppers in the souk took shelter under awnings and inside shops to wait out the downpour.
The storm follows a summer marked by prolonged heatwaves and unusually high temperatures across several parts of the North African country. It also comes just months after Tunisia experienced deadly flooding in January, when the country’s heaviest rainfall in more than 70 years killed at least five people.
