Qatari Emir and US President Discuss Peace Initiatives in the Middle East
LONDON — President Donald Trump and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani discussed efforts to ease Middle East tensions during a phone call on Tuesday, as the US-Iran conflict enters its sixth month.
The conversation focused on reconciling Iranian and US views to enhance the chances of a diplomatic settlement, according to Qatar News Agency. Both leaders emphasized the importance of ongoing coordination between their countries amid regional and international developments.
The Qatari emir stressed the role of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing contentious issues and urged all parties to adhere to the June 17 memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, which called for a halt to military operations and set a 60-day window for a final peace deal. The ceasefire, however, ended on July 7 when fighting resumed.
The US has made the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping a prerequisite for discussions on Iran’s nuclear program and Tehran’s demand for the release of $100 billion in frozen assets. Iran has targeted several Gulf nations since the war began on February 28, including Qatar, which hosts Al-Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the region, and shares ownership of the South Pars/North Dome gas field with Tehran.
