Saudi Arabia Praises New Gaza Agreement as Step Toward Regional Peace
RIYADH — Saudi Arabia welcomed on Friday a deal announced by President Donald Trump for Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw from Gaza, describing it as a “historic agreement” that advances regional peace efforts.
The Foreign Ministry said the Kingdom emphasized the importance of the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, the deployment of an international stabilization force, and the continued, unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance and reconstruction support to the Palestinian people.
Under the 15-point roadmap, Hamas will hand over its weapons to the Palestinian technocratic body established to run the territory. Hamas officials confirmed on Friday that the group had agreed to the deal, while Israel had not yet responded.
The agreement was also welcomed by international leaders. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described it as “a constructive step” if fully implemented, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on all sides to follow the roadmap without skepticism. British Foreign Minister Ed Miliband said the focus must now be on implementing the September peace deal, and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Germany stands ready to support the people of Gaza with humanitarian aid.
Saudi Arabia reiterated that successful implementation of the Gaza peace plan depends on the return of the Palestinian Authority to rule Gaza and the preservation of the territory’s unity.
