Hottest Day in Saudi Arabia: 50°C Temperatures Raise Heatwave Concerns
RIYADH — Parts of Saudi Arabia experienced the hottest day of the year so far on Tuesday, with temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius in the Eastern Province city of Al-Ahsa, according to the National Center for Meteorology.
The previous high for the year was recorded on May 29 at 49.3°C. The NCM warned that temperatures between 49 and 50 would affect much of the Eastern Province, including Dammam, Dhahran, Alkhobar, Jubail, Qatif, Ras Tanura, and surrounding areas. Dust storms were also expected to reduce visibility on highways until 5 p.m.
In June, the center forecast higher-than-normal temperatures across the Kingdom for July and August, with below-average rainfall expected in the Eastern Province.
Residents have adjusted their routines to cope with the heat. Rahaf Al-Madani told Arab News she plans her day to park close to destinations and avoids going out during peak hours. “I make sure to wear sunscreen and stay well hydrated,” she said. Another resident, Raghad Gasem, noted that indoor activities such as padel, shopping malls, cinemas, and board game cafes have become popular alternatives during the hottest part of the day.
