Saudi Arabia Celebrates Strong Victory at Balkan Mathematical Olympiad
Saudi Arabia demonstrated its growing strength in international mathematics competitions, capturing two gold medals and one bronze at the 43rd Balkan Mathematical Olympiad held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from May 3 to 8.
The three Saudi winners represented different regions of the Kingdom. Abdulilah Mohammed Al-Saqqaf from Jeddah’s General Administration of Education and Abdulsalam Abdullah Al-Sulami from Madinah’s General Administration of Education each earned gold medals. Elias Shaker Al-Faraj, representing the Eastern Region Education Department, secured a bronze medal.
The competition brought together approximately 148 mathematics students from 24 countries, showcasing some of the brightest young mathematical talent from Europe and beyond. Saudi Arabia’s performance demonstrates that the Kingdom’s students are competitive at the highest levels of international academic competition.
Building a Consistent Record
This year’s medals represent another milestone in Saudi Arabia’s expanding presence at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad. Since first participating in 2010, the Kingdom has accumulated 68 total awards across the competition. The collection includes four gold medals, 14 silver medals, 46 bronze medals, and four certificates of appreciation—a testament to sustained excellence over more than a decade.
The consistent success reflects a long-term commitment to identifying and nurturing mathematical talent across Saudi society. The Kingdom’s participation is organized through the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, known as Mawhiba, working in partnership with the Ministry of Education.

Behind each medal lies extensive preparation. Students competing for Saudi Arabia undergo intensive preparation through national competitions and specialized training camps.
